From Rainbow Row to the Battery and Meeting Street, Charleston is filled with a rich history that Southerners and visitors alike have explored for hundreds of years. But before the Industrial Revolution and the advent of vehicles, the world ran a little slower. Take away the paved streets, parallel parkers and stoplights and the city becomes a simpler place where onlookers have time to take in the beauty of their surroundings. We may not be able to go back to the days before traffic, but we can experience a sample of the serenity of the old slow South. Horse-drawn carriage rides with operators such as Palmetto Carriage Works (the oldest in the city) or Carolina Polo & Carriage Co. (run by native Charlestonians whose family arrived in the area in the 1600s) may be just what you need to truly see the city.
